SHERATON HOTEL
MAHWAH, NEW JERSEY
A renovation of 226 guest rooms and 50,000 square feet of public space that draws inspiration from the building’s existing postmodern structure, the site's history with the Ford Motor Company, the Sheraton brand's affinity for geometric patterns and the meaning of Mahwah in a local Native American language: place where paths meet. The open floor concept of the lounge was carved into the hotel’s previously compartmentalized plan, while maintaining the bold original ceiling and wall architecture. Guests are provided an overall casual lounge atmosphere with a network of environments promoting relaxation, interaction, amusement or productivity. Commissioned and selected artwork is a unification of geometric and automotive imagery, best seen in the installation behind the reception desk: a series of toy cars assembled in chevron patterns. Repetitive linear elements evoking intersecting trails are applied to the design of the custom carpets, wall coverings and screens, as well as the overall space planning of public areas. The overall result is visually appealing spaces that enhance each guest's experience while celebrating the history of Mahwah and the Sheraton brand.
